Nursing Students Present Posters on Community Health
Spring 2005Alpena Community College LPN students went public
on March 7th. A poster presentation was held displaying information
about a variety of community health organizations. Subject matters
included an assortment of topics related to community health.
The students hosted a variety of visitors including individuals from
various organizations as well as instructors, administration, and
support staff from the college.
The poster exhibition journey started in early September.
Students in nursing instructor, Cecilia Peasley's, Community Health
class were encouraged to select from a variety of topics of
interest. The primary focus of the activity was to develop a
poster in such a manner that was both informative as well as
educational. Subjects such as children's health and welfare,
death and dying, maternal and child health issues, community
oriented primary care, domestic violence, addictions, and disaster
preparedness were topics of interest. Students worked in
groups of four and were encouraged to simply, "go forth and seek
knowledge".

A Great Learning Experience
Students found the activity to be a "great learning experience".
Students agreed that they had a much greater understanding and
appreciation of what was available in their community. Many
visitors at the presentation commented on the wealth of information
on display and appreciated learning about community resources.
Posters will be displayed at the Alpena Regional Medical Center
this coming month. In addition, students have been invited to
exhibit their work at the upcoming northern Great Lakes Michigan
Nursing Association workshop on April 29, 2005.
