LAND Award Summary
Nominees Denise Hill, Priscilla Homola, Thomas Ray and Laurie
Wade have worked together for the past four academic years. Together
over these four years they have created and developed a strong
literary-arts community both for students on campus as well as for
members of the city of Alpena. Facets: ACC’s Journal for the Arts,
the core of this literary-arts project, was begun in 2000. Facets
has since become included in courses as required reading, submission
for publication has become required in several courses, and public
readings both on and off campus have been developed as well as
support for the biannual ACC art show. In its first year, Facets ran
500 copies; this last year, 2000 copies were printed and continue to
be distributed on campus, in the community, and utilized as a
recruitment tool, in addition to the creation of a
publication web site.
Many of the students whose works have been published in Facets
have continued on in their education in liberal arts, most notably
several art students who have gone on to universities and art
institutes, and writers who have gone on to university and teaching
programs. These students are grateful to have Facets to add to or
begin to build their portfolios. Several have gone on to submit to
and be selected for publication in other academic and national
journals.
Facets has also received numerous recognitions for which the
advisors have applied:
Columbia Scholastic Award – 2000/01 Silver; 2001/02 Silver; 2002/03
Silver; 2003/04 Gold American Scholastic Press Association – 2002 –
2004 First Place each year Community College Humanities Association
– 2000/01 – Honorable Mention; 2003/04 – Most Improved Magazine
