Alpena Community College’s A College Day for Women was conceived in 1993 as a result of a conversation between ACC Trustee Florence Stibitz, and friend, Sally DeYong. The two had observed a lack of opportunities for women in northeast Michigan. Identifying ACC as the perfect site, ideas began to take fruit. On November 22, 1994, ACC’s first A College Day for Women was held in ACC's Van Lare Hall. About 100 women attended the 16 classes offered. A luncheon was catered, as there was not yet a campus Food Service department. Cost for the day was $10. In 1996 the event moved to the new Center Building. With increased capacity the event doubled in size. A keynote speaker was added and from 1994 through 1999, a children’s event was included. A College Day for Women has changed through the years in response to community needs. When demand for a children's event declined, it was eliminated. In 2006, A College Day for Women changed its market and became A College Day for the Community, providing an event open to everyone. In 2007 the Volunteer Center offers another new event, An ACC Flute Festival. As future community needs are identified, other new programs may be added. if you have a suggestion for a program, project or event, please call the Volunteer Center at 358-7271.
