This display is a unique opportunity to view over 100 animal mounts from the United States, South America, Australia and Africa. Steve Armstrong is an ethical trophy hunter, while his wife Shirley prefers to capture the animals with her camera. A lifetime of outdoor experiences has given the Armstrongs a passion, commitment and love for the outdoors and for wildlife.

Steve and Shirley Armstrong have been small business owners in the Alpena area since 1978. They own and operate SSRM Machine Shop, Inc. where heat induction tubing benders are built and designed for the automobile industry. They love meeting “real” people and look forward to sharing their outdoor experiences and plans for future adventures.

This class will teach the basics of knitting.  A little rusty on your skills? Now's the time to refresh them. You will need two needles (either double or single pointed - about size 5) and some yarn.  If you feel you will continue what you start, you may wish to start with a skein of yarn.  This will be the American style of knitting, although Continental instructions will also be available.

teacher, learned to knit when she found a set of needles and a learn-how book in her Christmas stocking. She proceeded to make hooded sweaters for her daughters, instead of something simple.  Over the years, she has made over 80 sweaters, several baby outfits and blankets, Christmas stockings, caps, mittens and scarves.

Although the glorious colors of summer flowers have faded, now is a great time to get out in the flowerbeds to dream and prepare for next year's blossoms. The first session of this class will discuss what is needed for a successful fall clean up to make your garden all that it can be. The second session on October 20th will cover the planting and care of bulbs.

Netta loves to garden and owns and operates Netta's in Posen and has graduated with honors from the gardening "school of hard knocks." She said that Michigan gardening offers many ups and downs and you learn to deal with it.

European beaded charm bracelets are the rage. If you choose, put one together at a very moderate price, either as a great gift to yourself or someone dear. Whether looking or buying, you will come away with knowledge of the latest accessory trend.  Spark a change with autumn shades of warm cocoa, burnt sienna, copper and bronze.  Ellen says, “Bring your fashion questions about style, fabric, color and function and we will problem solve together.”

Ellen Gould has 35 years experience in women’s specialty retail.  Her Fashion 101 presentation last spring was filled with “healthy for the spirit and easy on the purse” tips. Ellen is a third generation fashion expert, working in a business begun by her grandfather and continued by her father.

Howard Lahti is a retired math teacher from APS and has been carving since 1996.  Howard enjoys carving caricatures, flat plane figures, free form and geometric chip, birds and animals.

Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany is the largest festival in the world.  Each year six million visitors from around the world converge for beer, wine, ethnic food and a whole lot of fun.  Join us for Oktoberfest—Alpena style.  You will be treated to an authentic celebration including German buffet dinner, beer, wine and traditional music. This will be live entertainment!  Dirndls and Bavarian Lederhosen are certainly optional, but would be enjoyed.

Larry and Carol LaFleche and Randy and Donna Dresback ( auf Deutsch:Driesbach) are the hosts.  They look forward to sharing the enjoyment they’ve experienced at many Oktoberfest celebrations. Randy and Larry share a German heritage and all four hosts enjoy a good beer as well as those tasty German wines.

Food safety issues are in the news often, making this presentation extremely topical.  Learn how you can make a difference by buying locally produced, organically grown vegetables and herbs and supporting local farming enterprises. Centurion Farms is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). A local Alpena farm was started in 2007 from a SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) grant. Utilizing organic methods, the farm grows and distributes “shares” to local organizations in need, private shares and other markets.  You will learn how the Sunrise Food Coalition strengthens the health and well-being of our greater community by developing local food and farming. Their mission creates local jobs in Northeast Michigan while ensuring every community member has access to safe, nutritious and affordable food.

Yvette King, manager of Centurion Farms, earned her B.S. in Horticulture from MSU.”   Yvette’s passion for plants and farming began in her early years, living in England.  She has lived in the Alpena area for almost ten years.

ALL members have requested that ACC Faculty discuss what is new in their fields of expertise and interest. Kendall Sumerix has graciously agreed to be the first presenter in this series, sharing his knowledge of bio-chemistry. 

Kendall Sumerix graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in bio-chemistry and has been teaching at ACC since 1990.

The two-time Pulitzer prize winner and biographer of three great American presidents brings a fresh look at the critical events of the American Revolution and makes an eloquent case that the victory of the colonies over the massive force of Great Britain, was won in the face of “all-too-few victories, of sustained suffering, disease, hunger, desertion, cowardice, disillusionment, defeat, terrible discouragement, and fear.” “Without Washington’s leadership and unrelenting perseverance, the revolution almost certainly would have failed.” And yet, even so, “the outcome seemed little short of a miracle.”

Laurence A. Martin is a retired Presbyterian minister with special interest in the formation of our nation. He and his wife, “Annie” have made Alpena their home since Easter 1991.

Learn the art of raclette: a staple of wintertime dining in Switzerland.  The class will be cooking the meal (steak, chicken, fresh vegetables, boiled potatoes, sweet pickles, condiments and raclette cheese) on a raclette grill.  Wine, crusty French bread and a light dessert will top off this gourmet delight!

F-17 Scraps, Scraps Never Throw Them Out

Here’s the perfect class for using all your fabric scraps – even those as small as 2”x2” – to make a multi-colored-quilt. It’s an easy way to sew, stopping and starting whenever necessary. Bring a sewing machine, as many scraps of material you can gather , thread (beige, light grey or brown) and if possible rotary cutter, ruler, cutting board and plastic square.

Louise McMaster has been sewing for 35 years. She served in the Peace Corps in Turkey and is currently a home care physical therapist. Her brother-in-law claims she is very qualified to teach the class because she has spent 10,000 hours in quilt stores. Her goal is to visit every quilt store in the United States.

Keith Wallace has been a practicing attorney in Alpena for 40 years.  He is a member of the Isaackson &Wallace Law Firm and is Public Administrator for the State Attorney General office in Alpena.

F-20 An Intro to Multiple Intelligences Theory

"It's not how smart you are; it's how you are smart."  The first half of this presentation will encompass an introduction to the basic concepts of Howard Gardner's brain-based  Multiple Binet's fading IQ paradigm, the bell-shaped curve, context-bound assessment, cultural bias, standardized testing, the plight of valedictorians, and  school reform. The second half will review the results of the presenter's doctoral dissertation study. The audience will have an opportunity to take a short self-inventory of their own MI profile.

Greg Adamus holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from Olivet College and a Master’s degree in Education Management from Eastern Michigan University.  For the past 20 years he has been a house principal at AHS.  In his spare time Greg is a life-long music entertainer.

Fran Hamp is a retiree who learned this pastime while wintering in Florida.   Sharon Paltelky took the first class( angels) and got hooked on this project.

The Trumpeter Swan is North America’s largest waterfowl and was almost eliminated from this continent. Acquaint yourself with the reasons for their decline and the successful conservation efforts to reintroduce this magnificent bird in the Midwest. You will learn about on-going efforts to monitor the swan’s population along Michigan’s AuSable River and leave with knowledge about the “Great American Backyard Bird Count.”

Peggy Ridgway is a retired teacher from the Oscoda School District.  Birding has been a passion of hers for 45 years. She is recent past president of Michigan Audubon and AuSable Valley Audubon.

 

F-23 Erasmus

Erasmus (1466/69-1536), ordained as an Augustinian priest and called the "prince of the Christian humanists," wrote satire aimed at general human foibles, exemplified by his best-known work, In Praise of Folly, and specifically at problems in the Catholic church.  The latter activity endeared him for a while to Martin Luther, whose invitation to become a Lutheran Erasmus ignored, until the two clashed openly on the question of human free will.  In fact, his quest to stay on middle ground between Catholic and Protestant earned him contempt from both parties during a volatile period of church history.  

Olin Joynton is the president of Alpena Community College and a regular presenter for ALL.

Rev. Karen Thompson has been an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church since 1989, serves at Trinity Episcopal Church and is the chaplain for Hospice of the Sunrise Shore. She also served for many years as chaplain of the Macomb County Jail.  Rev. Thompson looks forward to sharing some often neglected and unknown information about Biblical women.

Claude Monet (November 14, 1840 – December 5, 1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature.   This presentation will be a review of the inspiration of the “great eye” of Monet, including a visit to the artist’s home in Giverny.
 Avis Hinks  is an art historian and lecturer, having done many sessions at the Besser Museum and the George N. Fletcher Public Library, plus numerous presentations for ALL.

You will learn about the I-Phone, the newest applications of cellular video and Mobile TV and Radio and whatever else comes out between now and then.

Bill Kroll, AT&T Store Manager at Alpena’s Washington Avenue location, is a relative new comer to wireless technology; but that just proves you are never too old to learn.  He has a little over two years experience in the wireless industry but has learned a lot in that time.  No need to be baffled, you can learn too! Bill plans on making the class fun and informative without using confusing technology lingo often heard.

This is a slide show of the Beem’s 2006 visit to Iceland with Colette Tours. Iceland, a land of contrasts, is one of the more unusual places visited and their first visit to the European continent.

Chip Lavely has extensive experience in music and theatre and is co-owner of a singing telegram business:  “Surprise ‘Em With a Song”  and a regular presenter for ALL.

 

F-29 Magellan’s Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe

Sailing from Spain, Magellan set forth on a most adventurous exploration in search of the Spice Islands.  This three year voyage was filled with terrifying experiences, yet with great accomplishments.  Five ships, with 270 aboard, set sail in 1520 - one returned in 1522 with 18.  The adventure along the way makes a fascinating story.

Denny Doubek is the past president of ALL and a retired teacher from AHS. 

 

F-30 ‘Tis the Season

This event features a guided tour by a Gallery 109 associate of the Loft’s Winterview exhibit.  You will have the pleasure of watching one or more gallery artists at work.   Winterview features over 35 Michigan artists working in various mediums such as painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, jewelry, wood turning, textiles and contemporary sculpture.  You will learn some unknown facts about the 105 year old Center Building which houses Art in the Loft and be given a brief history of the Gallery.  But wait…..there’s more!   If snowflakes are your preference,  go below to watch Alpena’s  evening Christmas Parade or stay toasty warm in the comfort of the Gallery  as you watch the parade below, winding its way down Second Avenue.  What a wonderful, relaxing beginning to holiday season 2008.

F-33 The Lost Gospels of Thomas and Judas.

Is it possible that the Gospel of John was written to refute the teachings of the Gospel of Thomas?  Some very prominent Biblical scholars think so.  When Christianity was young it had to determine what the life, death and resurrection of Jesus meant.  In the early church there was more than one interpretation of the meaning of Jesus' life.  It took almost 400 years and the Emperor Constantine to come up with an Orthodox understanding where some parts of Christianity were declared wrong and heretical and others found correct.  As usual the winners write the history and the loser’s accounting gets lost.  Now scholars have found early documents that give a diverse understanding of what early Christianity might have looked like.  We will be looking at two of the "lost" gospels of early Christianity by reviewing some of the work of Elaine Pagels and Bart Ehrman.  What do they tell us about what Christianity "might" have looked like if these gospels would not have been suppressed or lost?

Lucas Pfeiffenberger is a retiree from Besser Company after 30 years of employment.  Lucas is a volunteer at the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan concentrating on education and exhibits.

We will have cookies, coffee and tea (sharing one-half dozen cookies from each baker.) Recipes will be compiled and distributed later. What an easy way to get ready for holiday entertaining.
