Some people want it to happen, some wish it to happen,
others make it happen. In our community dedicated people work to enrich the lives of others in countless ways. Volunteers work behind the scenes, with little acknowledgement, but their contributions help others and improve our neighborhoods, schools, and work places. This month we recognize
Lois Centala
Lois Centala has a long history of
volunteerism. She has served with NEMROC, Habitat for Humanity, the
Boys and Girls Club, Beta Sigma Phi, and at St. Bernard Church. Lois
worked for 40 years with local credit unions, finally as Manager of
Alpena County Medical Credit Union, before retiring in 1997. Since
then, Lois has continued volunteering. In addition to other
responsibilities, she now serves as Board Chair of the Association of
Lifelong Learners at Alpena Community College. With ALL@ACC, Lois
helped establish a Leadership Team that successfully sought recognition
for the City of Alpena as an “Elder Friendly Community.” She has also
worked to create a Senior Coalition promoting collaboration with
agencies providing services to older adults.
Volunteers Bonnie Schmitz and Megan Dziesinski help with a Volunteer Center mailing. Volunteer Center programs and the services they provide the community would not be possible without the assistance of volunteers.
