Services: Huron Shores Campus Learning Center

Learning Center  - Huron Shores Campus

The Learning Center at the Huron Shores Campus is located on the ground floor of the Alpena Community College building (rooms 107 A, B, C), at 5800 Skeel Avenue in Oscoda, Michigan. Adjacent to the Huron Shores Learning  Center is the Computer Lab (room 109). The Learning Center consists of a general conference area, the Learning Center Coordinator’s office, a testing/tutoring room, and an instructional room that holds six (6) computers. The adjacent Computer Lab has 14 workstations.

The Learning Center is open for 13 hours per week, with hours in the afternoon and early evening, on Mondays through Thursdays. Hours vary from semester to semester, so call for current hours of service.

 TLC provides the following services free of charge (except course work costs) to all Alpena Community College students:

  1. Assessment
    Reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing and basic math assessments are administered in TLC. Students may refer themselves for TLC assessments, or be referred by instructors or because of COMPASS placement test scores. TLC staff make recommendations for placement in TLC reading, writing, study skills or math course work as well as English courses based upon assessment results and interviews with students.  Testing services are also available for proctored exams for ACC courses and Online courses.
  2. TLC Course Work
    TLC offers a student success course (LSC 110 - Becoming a Master Student) covering academic skills, life management skills, and an introduction to resources of the school and community.  Students wishing to enroll in TLC course work must have prior consent of TLC staff.
  3. Study Skills Course Work and Information
    TLC offers materials and workshops to help students learn and review study techniques. Topics may include studying textbooks, college reading skills, listening and note-taking, memory and concentration, test-taking, time management, learning styles, improving study habits and controlling stress.
  4. Tutoring
    Individual or group tutoring is available for all ACC courses. Tutoring is provided by trained and qualified peer tutors, who are ACC students with the necessary course work and background to assist other students.
  5. Other Services
    Additional services available at TLC include workshops and informative sessions, review of supplemental course work materials provided by instructors, assistance with resumes and employment interviews, assistance with internet research and ACC Internet Library Services, computerized word processing programs for student writing, professional writing instruction, special accommodations for students with disabilities, and referrals to on-campus and off-campus services.

Staff:
The Learning Center staff includes the Learning Center Coordinator, Jill Dorcey, an administrative technician. Jill holds the following:

  • Master of Arts degree from Central Michigan University
  • State of Michigan Continuing teaching certificate

Several work-study employees staff both the Learning Center and the Computer Lab. Peer and professional tutors are also employed on a part-time basis in The Learning Center.
